The new 49-meter-high Kirchberg water tower was inaugurated and commissioned on Thursday March 21. Located in a protected Natura 2000 area of community interest, it blends harmoniously into its surroundings.
The water tower comprises two tanks, with capacities of 600 and 400 m3, and is supplied with water from the Glasbouren and Sebes springs. It follows the urban development of the Kirchberg area, in particular the creation of the future Kuebebierg district, which will be home to 7,000 new residents.
The reinforced-concrete building features two types of facade: one in untreated wood lath on a steel frame, and the other in architecturally matched concrete. Designed to house nests for various species of birds (swifts, peregrine falcons) and bats, the water tower fulfils a dual role. Thanks to the natural ageing process of the wood cladding, this “tree among trees” will blend in with the surrounding forest over time.
